Protest over future of University of Nottingham language courses

1+ min ago (670+ words) Students and lecturers held a protest over the potential future of modern languages courses after a university suspended entry for new students. In April, the University of Nottingham announced more than 250 non-academic roles could be cut, with the vice-chancellor saying it was "grappling with significant financial challenges". Wider plans affect 42 courses and include discussions over the future of music courses and a "proposal to reduce its nursing offer". The university said "no decision is being made this week about course closures", with talks set to take place on Tuesday between the university council and unions. Any students currently on courses will be supported to complete their studies, a spokesperson for the university said, and its council is set to make a decision on the future of the courses in the near future as part of plans to address a fall…...

Winter Olympics 2026: British bobsleigh brotherhood target Olympic success

2+ min ago (749+ words) Great Britain competing at the World Cup race in Cortina d'Ampezzo "If we didn't get on it would be a big problem," British bobsleigher Leon Greenwood says with a wry smile. The four-man team are used to being in extremely close quarters inside the bobsleigh as they hurtle down the course at 85mph. But it applies beyond the track, too. "We have to share rooms together, sleep next to each other, listen to each other snoring" it's just a brotherhood." Greenwood is part of the men's bobsleigh squads which have tasted unprecedented success at World Cup and World Championship level over recent years, expertly piloted by Brad Hall. But an Olympic medal is missing from their roll of honour and that is what they crave as the season - leading up to the Winter Games in Italy in February - begins. Before then,…...

Environment Agency investigates foam on River Gipping, Suffolk

7+ min ago (167+ words) The Environment Agency is investigating after a large volume of white foam was seen on a river. The foam was reported on the River Gipping at locations between Needham Market and Sproughton in Suffolk over the weekend. It was also seen downriver in the Ipswich area on Monday. Aycliffe Santa tour to stop at funeral home in new proposals

15+ min ago (450+ words) Plans to change the route of a 65-year-old Santa tour, including a stop outside a funeral home, have been met with anger by residents. Great Aycliffe Town Council announced a "magical makeover" to the annual Newton Aycliffe tradition on Facebook before the post was edited to say "proposed changes to Santa tours". The proposals mean Santa will not ride around all of Aycliffe in his sleigh but instead stop at designated spots, including outside the Co-op funeral home on MacMillan Road, due to a lack of volunteers and suitable vehicles. A council spokesperson said it had been hard keeping the tours "safe and reliable" and highlighted how last year two routes were nearly cancelled. A recreation committee meeting is being held to discuss the plans, which is open to the public, at Newton Aycliffe council offices on Wednesday at 19:00 GMT....

Premier League signings: Which of top flight's most expensive signings have been money well spent?

23+ min ago (1892+ words) Two months ago Liverpool's huge summer transfer spend looked like it had made the Premier League title a formality. Arne Slot's side were five points clear at the top of the table after only five games, having strengthened their squad with "415m worth of talent. Florian Wirtz was signed from Bayer Leverkusen for an initial "100m, rising to a possible "116m. Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak joined on deadline day for a new record transfer fee of "125m, which could be "130m with add-ons. Nothing could go wrong, could it? Both signings have struggled and Liverpool's form has nosedived, leaving them 12th in the league. Wirtz has no goals or assists in 11 Premier League outings. Isak has yet to score a goal and has one assist. It is way too early to write off two of the most expensive Premier League signings of all time. After…...

Prior to last October's 3-0 defeat by New Zealand, they hadn't lost a Test series on home soil for 12 years. South Africa won the two-Test series opener in Kolkata by 30 runs. Resuming on 26-0, South Africa wobbled to 77-3, losing three wickets for 18 runs in a 13-over spell, before Tristan Stubbs took charge. Top-scoring with 94, he shared a century…...
