Morehead City mayoral race heads to Raleigh for further review

3+ hour, 16+ min ago (366+ words) CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - In a show of hands, the Carteret County Board of Elections has decided to send the Morehead City election protest to Raleigh for further review. "It was a hard decision, but we were not placed on this board to make easy decisions," Carteret County Board of Elections chair Jeanette Deese said. The board voted 3-2 in favor of finding "substantial evidence" or potential voting irregularities during the board's evidentiary hearing at the Carteret County Courthouse Monday morning. Incumbent Mayor Jerry Jones filed the election protest hearing. Monday's hearing consists of testimonies from voters who claim they were turned away on election day. "I know people are going to try to twist this around, but it's not about me, and it's not about my opponent, Lee Stiles. This is about the right to vote," Jones said. Witnesses took the…...

Meet Gobble and Waddle, two very lucky turkeys

7+ hour ago (262+ words) WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - Two turkeys from eastern North Carolina made their public debut Monday ahead of their Presidential pardon. The toms -- named Gobble and Waddle -- strutted through a press conference at the Willard Intercontinental luxury hotel blocks away from the White House. The names of the birds are usually secret until the press conference hosted by the National Turkey Federation. However, the White House made the announcement early this year. "This WAS the time when I was going to announce the names of these two lucky turkeys for the very first time," Butterball CEO Jay Jandrain said with a laugh during the press conference. "But this is Washington, D.C., and true to form we've had a bit of a leak." Gobble and Waddle will spend Monday night in a luxury suite at the Willard, which costs around $400 a night. "Our special guests…...

Russell’s First Alert Forecast: Warm to cold late week

17+ hour, 42+ min ago (213+ words) Tonight high pressure slides offshore, and that opens the door for a weak coastal trough to ride north along the coast by early Tuesday. Clouds will steadily increase overnight with lows in the 40s inland and 50s along the beaches. Tuesday brings a warm, wetter setup. As the coastal low moves in, moisture builds, temperatures climb well above normal, and scattered showers plus a few isolated thunderstorms develop through the afternoon and evening. Most storms will stay below severe levels, but lightning and downpours are possible. Wednesday is our warmest day of the week. A strong push of southerly wind lifts highs into the 70s to near 80" before a sharp cold front moves in Wednesday night. A few showers or rumbles are possible, but the bigger story will be the dramatic flip to colder, drier air. Thanksgiving looks cold, sunny, and breezy. Highs…...

Lenoir County Board of Elections dismisses protests against Lipford and Moore

2+ hour, 25+ min ago (322+ words) KINSTON, N.C. (WITN) - Formal hearings for protests filed against councilman-elect Les Lipford and mayor-elect Kareem Moore were held on Monday at the Lenoir County Board of Elections, after protests were filed alleging they didn't live within city limits. Both protests were dismissed. Moore's protest brought by Maria President was dismissed by the board due to her not being in attendance at the meeting. But it is possible that she can refile again. Moore's campaign team is calling on the board to certify his election, saying that it is inconsistent with state law for the board to be holding up his certification when there is no evidence provided in the filed protest that he lives outside of city limits. The meeting continued with Lenoir County GOP Chairman Sean Keenan providing evidence in support of his amended protest filed against councilman-elect Les Lipford,…...
