Public hearings scheduled for Duke's carbon and resource plan

17+ hour, 42+ min ago (122+ words) State regulators have scheduled public hearings for Duke Energy's 2025 Carbon Plan. The utility filed its resource plan in October. It requests permission to upgrade transmission, build new power plants and implement programs that meet the state's future needs. Duke forecasts an unprecedented increase in energy demand, driven by a rising population, new manufacturing and incoming data centers. The plan charts a course toward carbon neutrality in 2050 but calls for increased emissions for the next decade while extending coal plant operations through 2040. Members of the public may speak at the public witness hearings. Here are the scheduled hearings: Stakeholders will convene in Raleigh on June 9th for an expert witness hearing. You can watch that meeting on YouTube....

New poll shows Latino support for Trump is slipping after gains in 2024

13+ hour, 51+ min ago (135+ words) No Republican presidential candidate in history did better with Latinos than Donald Trump did in 2024. But there are lots of signs that support has evaporated. Democrats won big victories earlier this month in elections across the country " with large margins among Latinos. Poll after poll has shown Hispanics declining in support for Trump since he was sworn in for a second term. And a new, major Pew poll of more than 5,000 Latinos across two surveys underscores this point. There were some eye-opening findings, including: Seventy percent disapprove of the job President Trump is doing." The economy is a major concern; 4 in 5 see it negatively, and they blame Trump. More than two-thirds say the situation for Latinos has worsened. Most have serious concerns about their place in America....

'Nobody wants to come': What if the U.S. can no longer attract immigrant physicians?

23+ hour, 52+ min ago (870+ words) Michael Liu grew up in Toronto, Canada, then moved to the U.S. for college and medical school because, to him, America was the premiere destination for fulfilling his aspirations to become a physician and researcher. "You know, in chase of the American Dream, and understanding all the opportunities " that was such a draw for me," says Liu, who attended Harvard University. He is now 28 and has deep personal and professional roots in Boston, where he's an internal medicine resident at Mass General Brigham. But this spring, he was shaken by the Trump administration's cuts to scientific research at the National Institutes of Health and staff at the Department of Health and Human Services. "That was a really striking moment for me," Liu says. "It made me question where, professionally, it made most sense for me. I still have strong connections to…...

'Just Google' me: Slender Man stabber is recaptured after fleeing her group home

15+ hour, 19+ min ago (742+ words) Morgan Geyser, one of the perpetrators of the 2014 "Slender Man stabbing," was taken into custody near Chicago on Sunday, a day after cutting off her ankle monitor and leaving her Wisconsin group home. Geyser was reported missing on Saturday night after correction officials were notified that her GPS monitoring bracelet was malfunctioning. They contacted the group home and learned that "she was not at the home and that she had removed her GPS bracelet," according to the Madison Police Department. Madison police said they were not made aware of her disappearance until nearly 12 hours later, on Sunday morning. As the search unfolded, Geyser's attorney, Tony Cotton, posted a video to Instagram urging her to turn herself in. "Do not continue to remain on the run like this," he said. "It is not in your best interest to handle this matter…...

Conflicting claims of CBP departure deepen confusion in Charlotte

18+ hour, 38+ min ago (316+ words) Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles and Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden have all said Customs and Border Protection agents left Charlotte, but the Department of Homeland Security insists the "Charlotte's Web" operation is ongoing. Carolina Migrant Network says that throughout the height of the operation, its hotline averaged 150 calls per day reporting sightings of CBP vehicles or requesting help for their detained loved ones. Since Friday, that number has dropped to around 30 calls a day. Still, DHS continues to tell WFAE and post on social media that the crackdown is "not over and is not ending anytime soon." Carolina Migrant Network's Becca O'Neill calls that messaging harmful. "Assuming they're gone, they refuse to confirm that, which just serves to further terrorize communities that have been so devastated by this," O'Neill said. Lyles and McFadden individually made statements on…...

‘Toxic Soup’: PFAS and other contaminants surged in French Broad River after Helene, study finds

14+ hour, 41+ min ago (850+ words) Fifteen days after Tropical Storm Helene sent debris, runoff and a cocktail of toxins " including raw sewage and pharmaceuticals " pouring into the French Broad River in the fall of 2024, Shea Tuberty set out to investigate the damage. The disaster stirred painful memories for Tuberty, "I've got PTSD from back in my 20s, when I lost my sister to a Middle Tennessee flood on Christmas Eve," he said. "So this all had a personal, horrifying impact on me." Tuberty said his friends who live near the North Carolina border in the Cherokee National Forest didn't trust what they were hearing from local or federal authorities as they were working to clean up Hot Springs, N.C., the closest community to their home. They peppered him with questions about the river. "We're working all day long in the sediment left behind by Hurricane Helene. What's…...

Chantal's aftermath emphasized Chapel Hill's affordable housing shortage for low-income residents with disabilities

19+ hour, 28+ min ago (503+ words) Chapel Hill resident Heather Gibbs had lived at Camelot Village for only three months before severe flooding from Tropical Storm Chantal in July forced her to evacuate. When water started creeping in from a corner of the apartment, she tried to move items onto high surfaces, but the water came in so quickly that she began to panic. "I tried 9-1-1, but couldn't get through," Gibbs said. "I called my sister. I said, 'I'm sorry, I don't usually panic. But this water's over my rain boots.' I'm like, how can the water be over my rain boots inside?" Gibbs noted that many Camelot Village residents are elderly and have disabilities. "(Neighbors were) losing devices, like walkers, crutches," she said. "One guy lost his prosthetic leg. (There was) someone who was in a wheelchair, a man with dementia. These are the types…...
